TablePress allows you to easily create and manage beautiful tables. You can embed the tables into posts, pages, or text widgets with a simple Shortcode. Table data can be edited in a spreadsheet-like interface, so no coding is necessary. Tables can contain any type of data, even formulas that will be evaluated. An additional JavaScript library adds features like sorting, pagination, filtering, and more for site visitors. Tables can be imported and exported from/to Excel, CSV, HTML, and JSON files.

TablePress Extensions

Additional features and useful enhancements are available as separate plugins, called TablePress Extensions, on the plugin website.

After installing the plugin, you can create and manage tables on the „TablePress“ screen in the WordPress Dashboard.

To show one of your tables in a post or on a page, embed the Shortcode [table id=<the-ID> /] into a „Shortcode“ block at the desired place in the block editor. Each table has a unique ID that needs to be adjusted in that Shortcode.

After that, you might want to change the styling of the table. You can do this by entering CSS commands into the „Custom CSS“ textarea on the „Plugin Options“ screen. Some examples for common styling changes can be found on the TablePress FAQ page.
You may also add certain features (like sorting, pagination, filtering, alternating row colors, row highlighting, print name and/or description, …) by enabling the corresponding checkboxes on a table’s „Edit“ screen.

The easiest way to install TablePress is via your WordPress Dashboard. Go to the „Plugins“ screen, click „Add New“, and search for „TablePress“ in the WordPress Plugin Directory. Then, click „Install Now“ and wait a moment. Finally, click „Activate“ and start using the plugin!

Manual installation works just as for other WordPress plugins:

  1. Download and extract the ZIP file.
  2. Move the folder „tablepress“ to the „wp-content/plugins/“ directory of your WordPress installation, e.g. via FTP.
  3. Activate the plugin „TablePress“ on the „Plugins“ screen of your WordPress Dashboard.
  4. Create and manage tables by going to the „TablePress“ screen in the admin menu.
  5. To insert a table into a post or page, copy its Shortcode [table id=<ID> /] and paste it into a „Shortcode“ block at the desired place in the block editor. Each table has a unique ID that needs to be adjusted in that Shortcode.
  6. You can change the table styling by using CSS code, which can be entered into the „Custom CSS“ textarea on the „Plugin Options“ screen.

Not only did TablePress quickly solve my organization's challenge for putting a LOT of data on our website (searchable tables to allow comparison between specific state law subsections), it is fairly easy to set up and run with. We had some challenges, but those are easy to overcome. I recommend that custom CSS be placed in the custom CSS area of your WordPress THEME rather than in the custom CSS area of the plug-in, particularly if you already have some theme development that may override what a plug-in wants to do (such as fonts, colors, and so forth) or what a browser wants to do. Once we had that idea, the rest was a BREEZE. Doing that eliminated row height, white space, and other problems; we had other style issues with the plug-in and our theme we could NOT resolve in the plug-in's custom CSS area. We used some of Tobias's extenstions to add column filtering (a MUST for us) in combination with wildcard search, and played around with other options available (like setting hover colors, alternating row colors, forcing column widths, and so forth). Highly recommend the column filter extension! NOW all we need is for someone more brilliant than us to write up another extension that will cause the search term entered into the wildcard search box to be HIGHLIGHTED in the rows, because if you have a lot of content in a row, it is difficult to readily see WHY a certain row returns with the wildcard search (like when you use the "find" function in Chrome). Please? Anyone? I want to add that Tobias is engaged, patient, and helpful, and responds quickly to cries and whining for help (at least he did mine). All told, this has to be one of the most brilliant plug-ins I've used to date. Thanks, Tobias. (Are you SURE you don't want to develop an extension to highlight the wildcard search word(s)???)

I'm not very good at code but using this plugin is really simple. Also the possibility to import the excel to go faster is really useful. And the author respond very quickly to any question. Highly recommended

Muchas gracias a Tobias por desarrollar este plugin y todas las extensiones. Si necesitas mostrar una tabla en WordPress este plugin es el mejor sin duda. Además Tobias es muy rápido contestando las dudas y es muy colaborador.

I tried so many different plugins before I got to TablePress and I am so happy! All the free versions of any data table plugins are useless. This is free, Tobias has created lots of useful extensions (FREE - but donation is welcome of course!) and is always super quick and helpful when you encounter an issue! Thanks so much Tobias, I am a TablePress convert 🙂
