„Gutenberg“ is a codename for a whole new paradigm in WordPress site building and publishing, that aims to revolutionize the entire publishing experience as much as Gutenberg did the printed word. Right now, the project is in the first phase of a four-phase process that will touch every piece of WordPress — Editing, Customization, Collaboration, and Multilingual — and is focused on a new editing experience, the block editor.

The block editor introduces a modular approach to pages and posts: each piece of content in the editor, from a paragraph to an image gallery to a headline, is its own block. And just like physical blocks, WordPress blocks can added, arranged, and rearranged, allowing WordPress users to create media-rich pages in a visually intuitive way — and without work-arounds like shortcodes or custom HTML.

The block editor first became available in December 2018, and we’re still hard at work refining the experience, creating more and better blocks, and laying the groundwork for the next three phases of work. The Gutenberg plugin gives you the latest version of the block editor so you can join us in testing bleeding-edge features, start playing with blocks, and maybe get inspired to build your own.

As a WordPress developer, this addresses the number one question I get from clients: "In [insert other wysiwyg editor here] I can drag and drop and immediately see what my site will look like, why can't I do that in WordPress?" I'm delighted that I can now provide my clients with a richer, fuller, more powerful editing experience, while having control over how the final markup is rendered.

Just leaving a contribution for the community. Gutenberg may be the worse WordPress choice. - Useless for page customization - Hard to learn and difficult to use - Bad layout (everything seems to be hidden) - Difficult to get back to main WordPress menu - Horrible backend design We recommend to review the whole work, step back or work on something similar as WP Bakery or Elementor Editors.

I can't believe WordPress adopted this as the default content editor.

It's not acceptable to anyone who uses CSS to format content, that at a minimum there is no option to adjust margins and padding, as well as most other CSS rules. I was not able to override Gutenberg with my own CSS - even with !important. The Disable Gutenberg plugin is recommended until more than the most basic configuration options are given to the user.

Are the quirks/issues with Gutenberg? Yes. Are there major improvements needed? Of course. But at the same time this project is moving WordPress into the future and the rapid progression of the platform is very encouraging. Can't wait for full-site editing!
